Lawnside Heritage Day
Camden Chapter
Sisters from the Camden Chapter of NHBW march in the annual Lawnside parade. After the parade, informational tables, vendors, and live music are some of the activities the residents of Lawnside and visitors partake. The borough of Lawnside has a colorful and interesting past which includes being a stop for slaves migrating to Northern cities. Lawnside, New Jersey has "claimed a place in history, becoming the first independent self-governing African-American community north of the Mason-Dixon line." There is a very nice article written by Junious Ricardo Stanton that highlights the origin of Lawnside and its' citizens. To read the article, follow the link to http://www.nathanielturner.com/historiclawnside.htm. Click on the link http://www.petermotthouse.org/museum.html to learn about the Peter Mott house and museum which is the oldest known house in Lawnside and a stop to hide slaves. Also visit the Mt. Pisgah AME Chruch website http://www.mtpisgahamechurch.org/index-1.html whose beginnings date back to the 1700's. Click on any picture to enlarge it.
